Case Study-Reducing Grit Trap Waste and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)

A large grocery company was paying a competitor over twice the industry norm for disposal of its grit trap waste in its truck wash center because the waste showed heavy TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) and was classified as Class 1. The manager called SOS to try to reduce the costs.

We identified the source of the problem: axle grease in the trenches. SOS proposed a regular cleaning of the trenches to prevent the axle grease from contaminating thousands of gallons of water. After instituting the regimen and resampling the waste came back as Class 2 (acceptable TPH), almost halving their grit trap cleaning bill… and SOS was invited to become the grocery’s primary liquid waste management vendor.
